This book got me through calculus after I slept through the first 5 weeks and realized I didn’t know what was going on anymore. I’m happy to have this legendary book as my first Math book read from cover to cover. This book served as a good reminder to what I had learned at school and reads in an enjoyable manner. The book goes into some depth and talks about chain rule, product rule and the quotient rule in Differential Calculus.

Feb 01, Isaac rated it it was amazing. Best math book I’ve thonpson read. If Thompson had wanted to bother with limits and epsilon-delta stuff he would have, so why drag that into the book? Readers will surely realise this book and that in many respects the calculus is an art rather than science. Jan 12, Ellen Kock rated it it was amazing. Calculus Made Easy has long been the most popular calculus primer, and this major revision of the classic math text makes the subject at hand still more comprehensible to readers of all levels.
Turns out I just hated how it was taught to me. The idea of infinitesimals is much more intuitive to me than limits as well. I’ve worked my way through another calculus text because of it and am able to understand discussions about aspects of calculus in other math books as well.

I strongly recommend it. Thompson’s little book is the best that I’ve seen, yet.
Of course, as the title presumes, this is a very thompwon introduction to the basics of calculus differentiating and integratingand the book clearly has its limits. Its available for free with Project Gutenberg. How refreshing to see that calculus can be taught in something pages instead of the modern bricks.
About Silvanus Phillips Thompson. I studied calculus at school, and used it occasionally at university, but I’ve not needed it since so this was a trip down memory lane. Thompson was both irreverent and witty in his development of the subject. It’s still not that easy, but – as Martin Gardner explains in the introduction – this book still outshines any textbook in terms of accessibility and simplicity.

It’s fun when someone loves the subject so much. It is difficult rating a text book. My judgement of the cover notwithstanding, Thompson does manage to demystify an sivanus topic. This article about a mathematical publication is a stub. This is ONLY because the original is so good. The original text continues to be available as of from Macmillan and Co. Nice book, often funny, philips the concepts are explained very clearly.
The style eays conversational, even breezy. Very British and sensible, and a much better approach to teaching mathematics to children or, silavnus my case, 28 year olds. The choices for initial examples and exercises were sometimes more complex than they needed to be, bringing in complexities unrelated to what was being taught. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Martin’s Press first published Someone trying to learn calculus for the first time could do far worse than using this work as their primer.
If you ever wondered what calculus was about find a copy of this book and read the first 4 – 5 chapters, they’re short. Gardner changes “fifth form boys” to the more American sounding and gender neutral “high school students,” updates many now obsolescent mathematical notations or terms, and uses Phollips decimal dollars and cents in currency examples.

Thompson is a cool dude. Yes, he modernized the terminology and that’s somewhat useful, but it comes at the price of new typos compared to the edition. This isn’t all the other calculus books out there.
