One of the few cases in which I liked the remake better than the original: In this major work of German-language poetic realism, Swiss author Gottfried Keller transports the star-crossed lovers to the Swiss countryside and turns the classic Renaissance drama into a piece of 19th century social criticism.
Being the children of formerly respectable farmers who in the course of the story lose all their land and belongings because of a dispute springing from greed, year-old Sali und year-old V One of the few cases in which I liked the remake better than the original: Being the children of formerly respectable farmers who in the course of the story lose all their land and belongings because of a dispute springing from greed, year-old Sali und year-old Vrenchen fall in love, get married, and well, you know what happens then.
So why did Keller aim to re-work this classic tale? After reading a newspaper article about the children of poor farmers who rather wanted to be dead than to be separated, Keller felt that his novella would be an effort to remember their destiny, and to criticize social realities that lead to real-life tragedies. In my quest to read more German classics, I will definitely go on to read some more 19th century realism! Vi sono significati e interpretazioni diversi che si intuiscono, alcuni, altri per me ben evidenti: Aug 11, Michael rated it liked it Recommends it for: This is a German book for fairly advanced students of the language, or of interest to those who study German literature.
It is not a particularly “fun” read, although it does have some passages which are good examples of flowery and passionate prose, and the overall story of doomed love between innocent youngsters may appeal to some. It does not in any way parallel the Shakespeare tale from which it takes its name, except in terms of the premise of two people falling in love in spite of their families’ animosity. It is very “German” in structure, with lengthy sentences and multiple participles, and paragraphs that frequently extend over multiple pages. The antiquated vocabulary is explained to some degree in a German language glossary at the end, but any native English-speaker will find their German vocabulary taxed even by the more modern terms.
It is probably best approached as a challenge to be overcome, one which is possible, but not easy, to succeed at. I’ve probably said too much about the plot already, given the inexplicable goodreads proscription against “spoilers,” but I will add that fairly little happens, outside of the heads and hearts of the main characters, except for the last few pages which finally move things to their inevitable climax. It serves as an excellent example of German romanticism in all its flaws and greatness.

Wow, who would’ve thought that this book would be kinda depressing? Literally anybody who read the title.

Written engagingly enough, and offering a lot of interesting food for thought after reading, I found this nevertheless a slightly disappointing story in itself. The title gives most of the plot away, but also raises expectations it doesn’t fulfill. It is based on an actual event the author read aut in in a short newspaper notice: In working this into a story, the author not only fleshes out the characters of the boy and the girl in some interesting detail, he also gives the whole background and development of the hostility between the families.
This is where the plots deviates crucially from ‘Romeo and Nud and where, to my mind, it becomes less effective than its precursor. The two farmers not only become enemies over a piece of land, they ruin themselves over the rivalry so much that, at the time the children discover their love for each other, there is no family left to stop the two young people from getting married!
The author then has to launch into a lengthy explanation of how the couple felt they had been raised to different standards of respectability, back when their families had still been of good standing, and weren’t able to conceive of such a non-standard procedure as getting married without parental blessing etc etc.
To illustrate the ill effects of living outside bourgeois standards, the author has them meet a group of itinerant musicians etc on their last evening who tempt them to join them, but they resist the temptation. It doesn’t help, though, that it doesn’t seem to have been at all unusual or frowned upon at that time and place for a young couple to get married on their own: So, since they are equally unable to part from each other and to fulfill what would have been the expectations auff their families, they decide instead to kill themselves.
I suppose it works in the sense that, on the one hand, from what you hear, very young people apparently do sometimes choose suicide in that light way of thinking about death. And on the other hand also in the sense that this being “a rural Romeo and Juliet”, you might expect some simpler set-up and a simple way of thinking from the characters.
Plus, of course, the power of the idea of respectability. Still, personally I’m afraid I found this plot development more annoyingly stupid than tragically moving.
Gotttfried most moving bit, really, comes right at the end according to the annotations, the author to a long time to get the last sentence right: Nov 19, Juffif rated it liked it. Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe by Gottfried Keller
Un classico di Gottfried Keller, che dire Mi ha commosso, nonostante tutto. Nov 05, Alice rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Keller setzt mit dieser ich denke doch recht bekannten Novelle Shakespeares Klassiker in eine andere Zeit an einen anderen Ort, doch das Thema bleibt gleich.
Es ist ein klassisches Werk des Realismus’. Ist nur irgendwie ein Fehler des Schulsystems. Nun noch einmal kurz zur Geschichte selbst. Feb 19, Nicola Watkinson rated it it was amazing.
I absolutely loved this book; the language admittedly a translation, but I shall be tracking down the original German A.

The title, and the synopsis, made the inevitable ending quite clear, but the fact is that the novella was based on a real event, and is not simply a parallel to Shakespeare’s play. I thought that the reason for the lovers’ suicide was well-explained and reasonable, although I was sorry that the book ended so soon; I will definitely be looking Keller up for future reading! This book was part of the German A level syllabus at my Grammar school. It left a strong impression at the romdo and I would like jilia read it again in English to find out if my memory of the story is accurate and if it gottfrled a similar impression 60 years on.
As I remember it the core of the story is a dispute between two men over ownership of a small triangle of land adjoining both their gardens and the tragic effects on the families. Mein Problem ist nur, dass ich dies nicht unbedingt als realistisches Werk bezeichnen werde, ich fand es eher romantisch. May 12, Vanessa rated it really liked it. Dec 30, Czarny Pies rated it liked it Recommends it for: Anyone wanting to sample either Keller or German romantic fiction. This is a sweet story of two doomed young lovers that makes their decision to put an end to their lives seem sweet and hopeful.
Written in Schwyzer-Dutsch and set in the Swiss Alps, this story stands nonetheless as a classic in German-language romantic literature. If you decide to sample the writing of Keller, be sure to pick an anthology that includes this little gem.
A brief but well written love story that was inspired by a true incident, though Keller extrapolates hugely. The two young lovers are charming individuals and the story is a romantic tragedy. Reading this book has certainly shown me that Keller is an author worth seeking out. Nov 21, Jonathan added it Shelves: Gotttried 23, Ana Enriques rated it really liked it.
