Silman’s discussion of imbalances is clear, well-thought-out, and illustrated with excellent examples. The writing is fluid, conversational, and, occasionally, quite humorous. And, specific to the 4th edition, I appreciate that Silman used entirely new examples.

This isn’t just changing three words and slapping on a new edition youd as a quick money grab — it’s well worth buying the new edition even if you already have the reawsess Edition of Reassesss. It’s not easy or low-level material, and if you’re trying to go, say, from under to you’re probably better off with The Amateur’s Mind or something even more basic.

chesw But if you’re looking to get up to A or B class, to say nothing of Expert and beyond, you really can’t do better than this. I do have an older third edition as well, and I will compare the two. There are plenty of reviews written about the quality of this book older editions includedand I rate the book 5 stars for its content.

However, I am not here to go rsassess detail about that, but rather focus on the differences between editions. Howw book contents are made up of the following parts: The Concept of Imbalances. Each part is further broken down into specifics and is concluded with a summary and test questions. The big differences between editions This is an oversized book, much larger and pages longer than the 3rd edition. Larger print and more white space – I find this makes it much easier to read. The graphic designer should be commended.

The 4th edition goes much more in depth!! Silman writes it himself, he “literally wrote this fourth edition from silmsn. Another hoa change youur the addition of Chess Psychology, 90 pages long! Silman claims many of these ideas have never been seen in any chess book before. The 4th edition does not include a Basic Endgames section like his 3rd edition. I believe it has no place in this book anyway and is covered in more detail in the previously mentioned work!

He chopped this section and other parts that “distracted from the book’s main purpose: The 4th edition is more humorous! From drunken knights to passed bananas, rassess will keep you interested with some laughs along the way. Again, similar to his endgame course! This is a little bit odd considering he wanted to cut out any distractions. Unnecessary, rsassess interesting nevertheless.

Perhaps Silman hoa to give his column a shout out. On the other hand, the Index of Concepts is a great addition. If one of your games has a Rook for Minor Piece or Isolated Pawn, you can look up this concept in the index and find the listed pages to learn more about it.

Silman recommends this book for USCF rated I won’t take away too much from it but I will add that Silman says, “If I am going to be known for one book, I wanted something I was really pleased with, and I am pleased with this. If you don’t have a copy of Reassess Your Chess, then this is a great buy. If you have an older edition, there is enough new material and ideas eeassess fresh examples to reassess all over again.

Silman sums up the differences there as well. This, the Fourth edition of Silman’s popular chess instructional, is by far the best one. I had the third edition, also very popular. But to me it was marred by: The convoluted, long explanations of a single position have in general been replaced by a very well laid out and concise explanation of basic positional chess concepts. In case you don’t know, this book has never chesss so much about ‘reassessing’ your game as it is about giving a sound grounding in positional, strategic chess concepts.

In contrast to the previous edition, this one has been extensively computer checked. Silman, long considered one of the best, if not the best American chess writers, has written a true magnum opus, one that he has said is his final edition silmzn his most famous work. This is a true classic, and one that I highly recommend you tackle before going on to a more advanced work like Pachman or Euwe or Nimzovich.

How to Reassess Your Chess: The Complete Chess Mastery Course

This one is more accessible to the developing player, more clear and explicit in explaining basic concepts that are assumed in more advanced texts. Also, Silman has a quirky sense of humor that is refreshing and makes studying chess less of a chore. To me, this is the best existing primer of positional chess concepts available.

If you have already become adept at basic tactics, adding xhess concepts in this great book to your game will elevate you above your current level, and you will truly begin to understand the game. See all reviews.
